Overview
The MMFA has been collecting student art work since the mid 1990s; the collection boasts a large variety of styles, techniques, media, and subjects. Out of collection storage emerges a powerful display of portraits made by students of all ages inspired by the Museum’s larger exhibition, Homecoming, by artist Lava Thomas. The works on display in Homecoming are portraits of remarkable African American people that the artist rendered from photographs. In the accompanying student exhibition, the works focus on living subjects, each conveying a different message and interaction with the viewer. Spend time getting to know these works, which will only be on view for a brief time, and you will come to understand why they were chosen to become part of the Museum’s student art collection.
