Thoughts from Lizzie Ammon
The show Unstill Life features pieces that capture those moments in time where we move without care of who is watching. By capturing a snapshot of mostly ordinary movement, these works evoke a sense of mystery and leave us with questions about the identity, activities, locations, and intentions of their subjects.
As the Assistant Preparator, I am constantly surrounded by works of art but have never been able to put together a show of my own. With this show, I was able to dive into the permanent collection to find pieces that spoke to me and then find a way to fit them together. The idea for the theme Unstill Life came from the realization that the bulk of what I was drawn to involved movement of some kind. The five works in the show evoked feelings from childhood, from looking at the stars to learning how to ride a bike. There was also a candid nature to them, it was as if they were all a snapshot of a moment in time and allow the viewer to imagine what came before or after. I am always looking at so many wonderful pieces; to use my point of view and show it to others is always exciting. I hope that when visitors come to the Museum and see the show, they can connect with it and create their own interpretations of the pieces.
