Charles Averett Stakely III

June 2, 1935–June 10, 2025

The Museum family will miss Charlie Stakely, one of its most faithful and generous supporters.

For decades, Charlie was a counselor to many of our staff and to multiple board committees.  He and his wife, Winnie Stakely, a former President of the MMFA Board of Trustees, contributed art to the Museum’s collection, and participated faithfully in the Museum’s educational and community events.

Charlie and Winnie gave their support to numerous art organizations in Montgomery, including the Montgomery Symphony and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. And Charlie was keenly interested in the process of adding art to the MMFA collections, noting that the presence of this art in Montgomery enriched the experiences of schoolchildren and all the citizens of Montgomery and the River Region in Central Alabama. Charlie valued the work of the Museum, and we valued his wise counsel and good spirited cheer.

Our thoughts are with Winnie and all of Charlie’s family, and we mourn his passing with you.
