Wares Ferry 5th Grade Exhibition
March 30 through May 13, 2019
On view in the ArtWorks Corridor Gallery
The ArtWorks Gallery is devoted to temporary exhibitions of student art, inspired by work on view elsewhere in the Museum. Throughout the year, the Museum juries and hosts themed shows, and guidelines encourage teachers to develop related lesson plans. Instructions for upcoming exhibitions of student art are included below.
Art of Our Own features original works from Wares Ferry Road Elementary School’s 5th grade students. After two years of weekly art classes taught at school by museum educators, these students were the first to continue their Learning Through Art enrichment for a third consecutive year in the 5th grade. Their early foundation of and exposure to visual arts elements and techniques encouraged, over time, the artistic growth to create expressively no matter the medium. In addition to making the artwork, the students also curated the exhibition and hung their individual labels and artist statements, after learning much during a behind the scenes look at museum careers from MMFA’s own curatorial department. Another special element to the 5th grade LTA curriculum was the addition of performing arts. The students learned choreographed routines inspired by works in the Museum’s collection, and performed those routines at the opening reception for Art of Our Own. The 2018-2019 5th Grade Class of Wares Ferry Road Elementary School will forever hold a special place in our Museum’s heart, and we wish them continued artistic growth for years to come.
The ArtWorks corridor is sponsored by Regions Bank and the MMFA Junior Executive Board.
