The MMFA holds more than 200 examples of works by self-taught American artists, most from Alabama or the Southeastern U.S. This installation features a cross-section of these works, from drawings by the early master Bill Traylor (1856–1949), to works by contemporary Alabamians of the Dial family. It also includes examples of quilts from the Museum’s extensive collection of late-20th century quilts made in West Alabama. Featured quilters are Lureca Outland (1904–2008) and Joanna Pettway (1924–1993).
Organized by the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, Alabama.
