Into the Woodlands

Overview

“Although trained as a printmaker, I enjoy exploring other media and approaches to materials as well. Woodblock prints have always held a special fascination for me and, as a print maker, I enjoy the steps involved in producing a color reduction print as much as the look of the carved wood block. Thus, it’s no wonder that the successive reduction cuttings and the final block suggested possibilities for exploring the woodcut paintings you see exhibited here.

For the past 41 years I have made our annual journey to Braeside, our cottage in Grand Haven, MI where I have my summer studio. Here we’re surrounded by a dense forest and the great expanse of Lake Michigan that serve as the resources and inspiration for the carved paintings. The wealth of wildlife and expansive views over the big lake with its ever-changing moods are recurrent themes in my work. And to expand the composition I decided to carve the wood frames thereby making them an integral part of these woodcut paintings.”
