Community Canvas with Winfred Hawkins

In celebration of the exhibition, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe, artists of all ages were invited to paint a raw canvas. Participants covered the surface with bright colors and patterns, and then local artist Winfred Hawkins unified the works into a complete composition. 

Community Guest Book with Tia Hayes

In celebration of the exhibition, Really Free: The Radical Art of Nellie Mae Rowe, artists of all ages were invited to make their own mark at an artmaking station in the galleries. Once finished, local artist Tia Hayes created a guest book of all 777 pieces. 

The final pieces was named “The Guest Book: Inspired by the Radical Artwork of Nellie Mae Rowe”.

Acknowledgments

These activities were intergenerational; every community member created artwork together, bridging the gap between different age groups through creative expression and welcoming everyone into creative storytelling.
