Kent Bicentennial Portfolio

Spirit of Independence

May 30 through August 16, 2026

On view in the Weil Gallery

Overview

Sponsored by the Lorillard Tobacco Company, this portfolio was created in celebration of America’s bicentennial year. It features prints by twelve American artists, each invited to interpret the question: “What does independence mean to you?” Each artist approached the theme from their own perspective, resulting in a diverse collection of prints that reflect the complexity and richness of American identity. Drawn from the Museum’s permanent collection, the exhibition includes works by Joesph Hirsch, Jacob Lawrence, Robert Indiana, Will Barnet, and others.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this portfolio invites us to reflect on the founding ideal of independence and re-think its meaning today.
