Joe Price, a Louisiana‑born, Alabama‑raised artist, developed an innovative approach to 20th‑century screen printing that allowed his prints to take on the rich, atmospheric quality of paintings. Screen prints are created by pressing ink through open areas of a silkscreen stencil. Artists build images by layering multiple screens, gradually constructing color, form, and depth. Price developed his own approach to the technique by formulating a more transparent ink mixture that allowed for extensive layering. His prints could include anywhere from 22 to over 100 screens, each layer acting like a brushstroke.

In 1970, Price earned his MA in Graphic Design from Stanford University. After a summer visit home to Alabama, Price was drawn to the way light and shadow could alter the tone of even the most ordinary scenes. His approach transformed mundane objects and rural landscapes into painterly quality prints created moments of quiet contemplation.
