Overview
Drawn primarily from the collection of William P. Hood, M.D. of Dothan, Alabama, Fabulous Flatware: Non-Traditional Tools of the Table showcased innovative flatware designs from 1898 to 2011. Highlighting the imagination and creativity of the various designers and producers of flatware—the implements used for eating and serving food—the exhibition took a new look at these daily tools. Collected into various themes such as Eating Can Be Fun (children’s flatware), These Take the Cake (pastry servers), Espresso Anyone? (coffee flatware), and Flatware That’s Not Flat, the forks, knives, spoons and serving pieces on display demonstrated the wide variety of styles, forms, materials and techniques available to decorate our tables. Accompanying the wonderfully diverse flatware pieces were various patterns of dinnerware and glassware providing a new look at the both practical and whimsical tools we use to feed our bodies.
