Jerry Siegel Portraits and Artists from the Permanent Collection

March 8 through June 1, 2014

On view in the Goldman, Richard, and Rushton Stakely Galleries

Overview

Over the past sixteen years Jerry Siegel has turned his camera to the South’s most creative forces. Through portraiture, Siegel captures intimate moments with established and emerging, celebrated and lessor known artists. These images reveal the people behind many of the region’s beloved works of art.

By providing details such as what the artist looks like or where they work, Siegel creates an important visual record that illuminates the rich art-making culture of the South. Pairing works from the MMFA permanent collection with Siegel’s portraits of their creators, allows for fresh interpretations of the art works and new insight into their makers. Artists photographed by Siegel with works on view include: William Christenberry, Thornton Dial, Sr., Crawford Gillis, Dale Kennington, Charles Shannon, Mose Tolliver, and Yvonne Wells.
