Charles Shannon

In conjunction with the Museum’s celebration of the Bicentennial and the symposium Bearing Witness: Art of Alabama, the Museum installed four paintings by Charles Shannon, one of the great artists of the mid- to late 20th century in the River Region. An important teacher as well as working artist, Shannon’s influence on art and artists in Central Alabama over a career that spanned more than fifty years is represented in the works included in this installation. One of the paintings, The Lover, became a part of the Museum’s collection in 1986; the other three important works are on loan from Mrs. Charles Shannon. Together these paintings represent the finest examples of Shannon’s ability as an artist with a sensitivity and passion for the American South and its people.
