Authority Figures

Traditional African Sculpture from the Collection of the MMFA

September 26 through December 6, 2020

On view in Wilson Gallery

Overview

There are many manifestations of power in traditional African culture including spiritual and political power. The individuals associated with roles in the power structure utilize objects as symbols of their authority or, in the case of spiritual power, tools for accessing it. This installation of works from the Museum’s collection of African art will focus on objects that are associated with authority in traditional African cultures.
