At the Table

Overview

Whether we are gathered around a table for a homecooked meal or picking up take-out, food brings people together. This time of year, we gather to celebrate those who are meaningful in our lives by showing how much we appreciate them through gifts, gestures, and, sometimes, a good meal. This show is a selection of works from the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ permanent collection, highlighting the beauty of food and the community it can build.

The image is an abstract watercolor painting featuring a still life arrangement of food items. On a tabletop, there are several rectangular and circular objects. The rectangular items are striped in various colors such as orange, yellow, and white. On top of these rectangles are what appear to be olives. Among these rectangles are round curvilinear shapes that resemble mounds with a gradient of pastel colors, primarily blue with hints of yellow and red lines. These mounds are interspersed between the rectangular items. The background is a muted, creamy yellow with a watercolor texture. In the bottom left corner, there is a small inscription in handwritten text, which also appears signed on the right-hand side.
The image depicts the interior of a store aisle, showcasing a refrigerated display stocked with a variety of dairy or processed food items. The top section of the image features four mounted deer heads, each with antlers, displayed on a white wall, providing a rustic contrast to the commercial setting. Below the deer mounts is a large refrigerator stocked with several rows of uniformly arranged packaged products in yellow containers. To the right of the refrigerator is a small shelf holding bottled water, and a bouquet of vibrant artificial flowers in pink, yellow, and red hues is visible in the foreground. The store's ceiling tiles and bright fluorescent lighting are also visible above the mounts.
The image is a simplistic, colorful painting depicting various fruits and a vegetable arranged on a plain beige background. In the upper segment, three circular, stemmed fruits are positioned: a pinkish-red fruit on the left, a slightly faded pink-orange fruit in the center, and a green apple on the right. Below them and to the left, a large wedge of watermelon with dark green rind and red flesh dotted with black seeds is illustrated, with its tip pointing towards the center of the canvas.
