Works by Self-Taught Artists from the Permanent Collection

February 24, 2023 through February 4, 2024

On view in the Folmar and Newman Galleries

Overview

In exhibiting these works of 15 artists from the MMFA’s permanent collection, we celebrate both their creativity and innovation. These artists come to their work beyond the bounds of formal art training or traditional expectations of what art is supposed to be. Art : Invention features art made largely for the joy of making, for personal fulfillment. The works themselves are as distinctive as their makers and the materials from which they are made are just as varied.

Individually and collectively, these works and their artists vividly illustrate that there is virtually no limit to the human imagination, to what a creative mind can conceive as art.

There is no limit to the human imagination, and these artistic inventions extend to the farthest boundaries of what the creative mind can conceive as art not just created, but invented.
