Art and Artists of the South

January 17 through June 29, 2025

On view in the Folmar and Newman Galleries

Overview

The rich art and history of the Southeastern U.S. is a major part of the permanent collections at the MMFAThis installation will feature art of two distinct periods: one contemporary and modern art that reflects the themes and subjects in the two most recent centuries, and the other the vastly different subjects from the early 19th century. In that period, there were very few trained artists in the South with limited practices and resources. In the modern era, the South is filled with artists working in many media, and in a host of stylesThis exhibition focuses a lens on the creativity of the South across the centuries.
