Overview
This installation features a selection of traditional African masks that were utilized in ceremonies by different cultures primarily from West Africa. While art historians treat these masks as fine art—within our Western concept of that term—they were and are cultural objects that held a meaning that came to life only through their intended use. These pieces are fascinating examples of the varied visual cultures of the African continent and its peoples.
These works on view include pieces from the collection of the MMFA as well as from the collection of Dileep and Martha Mehta of Atlanta, Georgia.
The MMFA’s From the Vault series focuses on highly-specialized areas of the Museum’s collection not always on view. These exhibitions present objects within a specific context centered around human creativity and innovation.
