Each workshop offers an opportunity for teachers and guest artists to share lesson plan ideas, view art in the Museum’s galleries, create hand-on art projects, network with other professionals, and earn certification hours. Art Ed Central is a regional division of the Alabama Art Education Association. The MMFA Education Department and AAEA District Representative BeeLee Tullos from the Montgomery Academy are co-sponsors of these workshops.

Costume Design Workshop

Using 1920s costume illustrations from the Ballet Russes, French Art Deco prints, the Ziegfield Follies and the Carnival of Venice as inspiration, participants will create costume pieces suitable for a fancy dress ball using a variety of materials and techniques.  Designs for masks, hats, capes, fans, sashes, scarves, gloves and other accessories will be created using craft techniques such as hand sewing, iron-on appliqué, fabric painting and gluing, among others. Space is limited to 20 participants. Sign up early for this unique opportunity to work with two well-known artists, with years of experience in theatrical costume design!

Join nationally recognized ceramic artist Christopher Greenman, Associate Professor of Art at ASU, for this unique workshop and create SALT AND PEPPER shakers utilizing various ceramic construction methods. Come with or without design ideas and with a head full of inspiration and imagination. The second workshop will involve decorating the artwork using ceramic paints or glazes, after the work has dried and been bisque fired. All supplies provided.

Led by local art instructor Sally Chambliss, the workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Once and Again: Still Lifes by Beth Lipman. Lipman works in glass and often photographs her sculptures in the landscape. Participants will create “glass” sculptures by manipulating plastic bottles, then photograph the works in the beautiful Blount Cultural Park, and post their creations on social media.
