Homeschool Day

Math at the Museum
April 8, 9 – 12

Homeschool families are invited to sign up for Math at the Museum.  Students will explore the use of geometry in works of art and the Museum itself and have the opportunity to create an original work of art based on the Fibonacci sequence.  Pre-school age children will also have the chance to explore the galleries, make art, and visit ARTWORKS.  Parents are encouraged to remain with the pre-school age children.  Registration is required and open until April 1, space permitting.  Please contact Brandy Morrison at edsecy@mmfa.org, 334-240-4365.  The event is free of charge.

Flimp Chalk Art Competition
8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Year after year participants fill the Museum’s parking lot with inspired works of art during the Flimp Chalk Art Competition. The MMFA provides premium materials and a designated parking space to all who register on time for the contest. During the Flimp Festival, visitors enjoy the vivid chalk drawings on the asphalt gallery, and local celebrities judge the winners.

The drawing times for the Flimp Chalk Art Competition will be Friday, May 6 from 8A.M. to 5 P.M. and Saturday, May 7 from 8 to 10A.M., before the Festival begins. Contestants can work individually or in small groups of up to 4 participants. The registration deadline is Wednesday April 6, 2016. Please contact edsecy@mmfa.org for more information.

Corridor Opening: Learning Through Art

Learning Through Art May 21 through June 26, 2016 This exhibition in the ARTWORKS Corridor will feature the artwork of 140 third grade and fourth grade students from the Wares Ferry Road Elementary School, who have been enrolled in the MMFA Artist in Residence Program for the 2015 – 2016 school year.

Holiday Open House

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts invites you to a Saturday afternoon
of holiday cheer at the 21st annual Holiday Open House. Activities include
performances by local choral groups, festive studio activities, and carriage
rides. The galleries will be open, as will ARTWORKS. Be on the lookout for a
certain red-suited guest who will listen to all holiday wishes.

There is no charge for Holiday Open House, but we encourage you to
bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or canned goods for the
Montgomery Area Food Bank.

Holiday Open House is sponsored by the BBVA Compass Foundation.

An Expressive Evening, hosted by the MUSES Teen Council

Enjoy an evening of creativity at the Museum with other teens.  Each year the Teen Council designs and hosts a tableau of artistic expression presented by local students.  Past acts have included readings of poetry inspired by works in the Museum’s collection; performances of arias, folk, and classical music; traditional Indian dance and ballet; speed drawing on stage set to music; commercials and dramatic readings; and much more.  Come enjoy this year’s lineup.

Putting Together the Pieces: Alice Walker’s Everyday Use and Quilting Tradition, co-hosted by Alabama State University

Dr. Jacqueline Trimble and Dr. Cat Gubernatis Dannen of ASU will lead a gallery talk in Sewn Together: Two Centuries of Alabama Quilts, drawing upon Alice Walker’s famous story Everyday Use in which quilts are a symbol of African American identity.  We will examine both the symbolism and context of the story alongside the quilts on the walls that were made by Alabamians and intended for everyday use.

Hans Grohs and the Dance of Death: A Workshop for Teens

Join us as we learn about the vivid work of German Expressionist Hans Grohs.  Assistant Curator of Education Elisabeth Palmer will lead discussions of Grohs’ prints in the exhibition Hans Grohs and The Dance of Death.  Participants will also be inspired to create their own “Grohs prints” in the studio.
