Native American Family Day

Spend the afternoon at the Museum learning about the art and culture of the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the only Federally-recognized tribe in the State of Alabama. Having been in the region for two-hundred years, the Creeks will share aspects of their heritage through an afternoon of storytelling, drumming, and dancing.

FLIMP Chalk Art Competition

The drawing times for the FLIMP Chalk Art Competition will be Friday May 2 and the morning of Saturday May 3, before the Festival begins. Chalk artists create inspired works of art in the Museum’s parking spaces, and the MMFA provides materials to all who register on time. During the FLIMP Festival, visitors enjoy the vivid chalk drawings in the parking lot gallery, and local celebrities judge the winners.

Flimp Festival

Check out the Museum’s new Education Backpacks for elementary students and their families. Backpacks include imaginative activities to guide you through the museum galleries. Art for Life’s Sake: An African Collection for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts

In the past African artists created objects that served specific purposes: leadership, religion, education, social control, etc.  Following a reception, the MMFA’s consulting Africanist, Dr. Robin Poynor of the University of Florida’s School of Art and Art History and affiliated with the Center for African Studies, will deliver a lecture on the functions of art in traditional African communities.  The program is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Art for Life’s Sake: An African Collection for the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts.

Homeschool Event at the Museum

On Friday, January 30, from 10 A.M. to 12 P.M., the Museum will feature its third annual event for homeschoolers of all ages and their families. The program will include treasure hunts in the galleries, special art activities in the studios and ARTWORKS, and educational lessons on iPads. With over 100 participants last year, we anticipate an even larger attendance this year for this special event.

History of the Civil Rights Movement in Alabama with Randall Williams

Writer, publisher, and history editor Randall Williams will explore the larger context of the civil rights movement in a discussion that ranges from slavery through Civil War and Reconstruction to the late 19th and early 20th century activism and organizing that resulted in the 1950s and 1960s dismantling of Jim Crow segregation. Alabama and Montgomery were at the center of this movement but were also part of a national political and social strategy that was evolving in the courts, the streets, the media, and government at all levels.  The program will also be recorded and made available on YouTube, Google+ and Museum’s website.

Military Open House

Holiday Open House

The Museum invites you to an afternoon of holiday cheer at the 20th annual Holiday Open House. Local choral groups will be performing throughout the Museum and the studios will be bustling with holiday crafts including the ever-popular Reindeer Feed Bags. The galleries will be open, as will ARTWORKS. Be on the look out for a certain red-suited guest who will listen to all holiday wishes. There is no charge for Holiday Open House, but we encourage you to bring a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or canned goods for the Montgomery Area Food Bank.

During this FREE event, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians will share many different aspects of their heritage in fun and interactive ways for all ages!  There will be storytelling by the Poarch Creek Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, dance performances, tribal drumming, and artisans demonstrating their skills.  We will have hands-on basket weaving, medallion making, and creating in clay, all in the Poarch Creek tradition.

Flimp Chalk Art Competition
8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Year after year participants fill the Museum’s parking lot with inspired works of art during the Flimp Chalk Art Competition. The MMFA provides premium materials and a designated parking space to all who register on time for the contest. During the Flimp Festival, visitors enjoy the vivid chalk drawings on the asphalt gallery, and local celebrities judge the winners.

The drawing times for the Flimp Chalk Art Competition will be Friday, May 6 from 8A.M. to 5 P.M. and Saturday, May 7 from 8 to 10A.M., before the Festival begins. Contestants can work individually or in small groups of up to 4 participants. The registration deadline is Wednesday April 6, 2016. Please contact edsecy@mmfa.org for more information.

Art Museum Day 2016

Join us for the MMFA’s celebration of Art Museum Day 2016 with Jazz Jams and Family Art Affair.

From 2 to 4 P.M. listen to David Banks Gospel Jazz Ensemble in the Orientation Circle, and enjoy art making activities in the studio inspired by An Alternate Vision: Self-Taught Art of the Twentieth Century from the MMFA Collection. The exhibition is on view through June 19.

Please also help us celebrate the opening of the ARTWORKS Corridor Exhibition: Learning Through Art. The show will feature the artwork of 140 third and fourth grade students from Wares Ferry Road Elementary School who were enrolled in the MMFA Artist in Residence Program for the 2015-2016 school year.

The opening reception and student recognition ceremony will be held from 3 to 4:30 P.M.

A Shakespeare Celebration!

A Family-Friendly, Blount Cultural Park Event
Saturday, October 15, noon – 7 P.M.

MMFA and ASF in collaboration will present a day for families to view the First Folio with offerings on the grounds of the theater including performances, creative children’s activities, artisan demonstrations, fight presentations, talks on Shakespeare, and more. Several arts activities (1 to 2 P.M. and 3 to 4 P.M.) will also be offered at the MMFA.

The day will begin at noon with a special Theater in the Mind Lecture on ASF’s Festival Stage in anticipation of a 2 P.M. performance of Gravedigger’s Tale. The First Folio will be on view at the Museum until 5 with related drop-in arts activities offered at the Museum from 1 – 2 and 3 – 4 PM. At these times young visitors will be invited to create their own paper Hamlet characters with costumes. Throughout the day, a variety of the entertainments listed above will be ongoing at ASF.

Family Art Affair and Jazz Jams

The whole family is invited to this FREE Museum program where everyone can enjoy the background of Jazz Jams, a dynamic exhibition, and a related art activity and ballet spectacular.

Participants will be invited to explore the exhibition Federico Uribe: Transformart and create inventive 3-dimensional artwork with jazz performances ongoing. The afternoon will end with a dance interpretation of Uribe’s work by the Booker T. Washington Magnet High Dance Theater starting at 4 P.M.

Native American Family Day

Join us for Native American Day! During this free event, the Poarch Band of Creek Indians will share many different aspects of their heritage in fun and interactive ways for all ages. There will be storytelling by the Poarch Creek Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, dance performances, tribal drumming, and artisans demonstrating their skills. We will have hands-on basket weaving, medallion making, and creating in clay, all in the Poarch Creek tradition.

American History Homeschool Event
8:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Museum will host its fifth annual event for the local homeschool community, offering interdisciplinary connections through engaging gallery tours and studio activities. Participants will traverse our country’s cultural development as represented in the Museum’s permanent collection, from Colonial and Early American portraiture, to romantic landscapes and simple country scenes as the nation industrialized, and increasingly new artistic styles that developed in stride with America’s cosmopolitanization. We welcome the whole family to participate, as activities will also be offered for preschoolers with their parents.

Flimp Festival

Join us for an exhilarating and creative approach to art. There will be art-related activities and entertainment including a sidewalk chalk art competition and live theatrical and musical performances by Booker T. Washington Magnet High School. Guests can look forward to a new student performance every 45 minutes. There will also be interactive demonstrations with Museum Store artists, a scavenger hunt, and concessions. The festivities will kick off with the ever-popular Do-Dah Pet Parade.

The event is free for all MMFA members, active-duty military and their immediate families. Tickets can be purchased the day of the event and are $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Family Art Affair

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts will join 150 other AAMD-affiliated art museums across America in celebrating Art Museum Day on Sunday, May 21, 2017 from 2 to 4 P.M. Art Museum Day is scheduled to coincide with the celebration of International Museum Day, which is this year on Thursday, May 18, 2016.  To mark the occasion, the MMFA will host a special edition of Family Art Affair and Jazz Jams on May 21, and as always, admission is FREE.  The Museum encourages guests to share their experiences at the MMFA’s Art Museum Day celebration via social media, with the hashtag #ArtMuseumDay.

Summer Art Camp

The MMFA will be offering three youth summer camps this year. All three camps will focus on the elements of art and promise to be fun and engaging, and participants will leave with an armful of their own artworks created in the studio. Participants will spend time in the galleries, engage in group discussions, and be inspired by a variety of media, such as clay, printmaking, paint, mixed media, and sculpture. Camp fee includes snacks and all materials used in art making. Campers are encouraged to sign up for more than one week of camp to get the full experience. All full-day campers are asked to bring a lunch every day. The camps are designed with working parents in mind, as extended hours are offered. Camps are limited to 20 students, so enroll today!

Summer Art Camp
8:30 am - 4:30 pm

The MMFA will be offering three youth summer camps this year. All three camps will focus on the elements of art and promise to be fun and engaging, and participants will leave with an armful of their own artworks created in the studio. Participants will spend time in the galleries, engage in group discussions, and be inspired by a variety of media, such as clay, printmaking, paint, mixed media, and sculpture. Camp fee includes snacks and all materials used in art making. Campers are encouraged to sign up for more than one week of camp to get the full experience. All full-day campers are asked to bring a lunch every day. The camps are designed with working parents in mind, as extended hours are offered. Camps are limited to 20 students, so enroll today!

Art in Concert
5:30 pm - 10:00 pm

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts Junior Executive Board will host its annual Art in Concert featuring Tank and the Bangas. The group from New Orleans recently won the NPR Tiny Desk Concert Contest. Band saxophonist/flutist Albert Allenback is a Montgomery native and graduate of Booker T. Washington Magnet High School.

Early bird VIP tickets cost $50 per person and include a meet-and-greet with the band, food and drinks. General admission tickets are $15 per person.

Art in Concert will be held rain or shine on the Museum grounds. Food and beverages will be available for purchase during the event. Bring blankets and lawn chairs. No outside coolers will be permitted. Tickets may be purchased in advance on our website mmfa.org or the evening of the concert.
