Family Art Affair and Jazz Jams

Music will fill the Museum and your creativity going as you visit the studio complete a make-and-take art project.  This FREE family program has specific themes related to Museum exhibitions and is sure to be fun and engaging for the whole family.

Sunday, September 24, 2 to 4 P.M.
Come and create in our studio!  Bring the whole family for a fun afternoon at the MMFA.  Listen to delightful music while you create a print inspired by the Frank Stella exhibition.

Sunday, October 29, 2 to 4 P.M.
Inspired by the work of Hans Grohs, a German printmaker, participants will create a fall or Halloween themed print.

Sunday, November 19, 2 to 4 P.M.
Create a landscape, using a variety of materials, inspired by the works in the exhibit “Landscapes, Cityscapes, and Harvest Scenes” on display in our gallery.

First Sundays

Learn more about the artwork in the Museum in these one-hour FREE docent led-tours, held the FIRST Sunday of each month at 1 P.M.  No Registration required.

September 3, October 1, November 5, and December 3  at 1 P.M.

Third Saturdays

Learn more about the artwork on view at the Museum in these FREE docent led-tours offered the THIRD Saturday of each month at 1 P.M.  No Registration required.

Gallery Backpacks

The Gallery Backpacks, designed for elementary students and their families, include imaginative activities to guide young learners through the Museum.  Backpacks can be checked out in
ARTWORKS (with a valid id) from the Educator on duty.

Film: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian
Wednesday, October 4, 1:00 P.M.

As a followup to Night at the Museum, shown over the summer, we hope your family will join us for further Museum adventures with Ben Stiller, this time on a mission in the Smithsonian. Assistant Curator of Education Kaci Norman will introduce the film and lead a fun discussion afterwards. The Museum will provide complimentary popcorn, and beverages will be available for purchase. Cash only please.

 

Preschool

(Ages 2 to 5 with an adult partner)

This FREE monthly program for young learners ages 2 to 5 and their adult caregivers helps develop early learning about elements of art through storytelling and a simple craft activity related to art on display in the galleries.

Instructors: Education staff and Docents
Time: 10:30 to 11 A.M. and 11 to 11:30 A.M.
Wednesdays: September 20, October 18, November 15, and December 20

 

 

Homeschool

All About Prints Homeschool Workshop 

Homeschool students of all ages are encouraged to register for a three-part workshop that introduces a more in depth understanding about printmaking. Students will learn about the print processes represented in our collection and get to experiment with different techniques. Younger and older students will be divided and work on age appropriate lessons and art projects. Everyone will go home with several handmade prints. Please indicate whether your child will attend the elementary or middle/high school sessions.  All sessions are held concurrently.

Time: 1:00 to 3 P.M.
Thursday: September 14, 21, and 28
Cost: $10 members/ $15 non-members for series of three classes

 

Studio Classes

Studio classes are available for teens and adults throughout the year. Classes offer instruction in a variety of art mediums, including digital media.  To register for any of the following MMFA studio classes, call 334.240.4365 or email edsecy@mmfa.org.

 

Young Artists (ages 3 to 5 with an adult caregiver)

In this introductory class, preschoolers will learn about the basic elements of art through looking at and creating a variety of artworks. The instructor will base the projects on works on display in our permanent and temporary galleries.   Each class will focus on multi-step processes to engage students in a range of activities and materials.  Class size is limited to ten children with an adult caregiver. All supplies are provided.

Time: 3:45 to 4:30 P.M.
Tuesday: September 12, 26, and October 10, 24, and November 7 and 21
Cost: $8 members/$12 non-members for each class; $40 members/$60 non-members for the series of six classes

 

After School Art I (ages 6-9)

The fall brings another fun-filled series of art classes. The series of classes will include traditional mediums such as painting, sculpture and drawing as well as exploring new media such as batiks, textiles and more. Class size is limited to 12 students per class.

Wednesdays: October 4,11,18, 25, and November 1 and 8
Time: 3:45-4:45 P.M.
Cost: $60 members/$98 non-members

After School Art II (ages 10-13)

Winter in the Studio (ages 6-13)

Sign your child up for a fun winter-themed studio class while they are out of school during winter break. Each day will have a different seasonal art project they can bring home. All supplies and materials are provided. Sign up for one or both days.

Thursday, December 28 and Friday, December 29
Time: 10:30 to 11:30 A.M.
Cost: $5 members/ $8 nonmembers for each class

 

Tuition cost will be refunded if a class is canceled.

For a full refund, cancellations must be made NO LATER THAN 2 WEEKS BEFORE
the class, workshop, or camp begins. After that time a 25%
administrative fee will be charged.
